Skulls were prominent in ancient Meso-American artwork, particularly among the Aztecs, some of whose gods were represented by skulls. The skull, a symbol for regeneration, was believed to repel evil influences and to be the seat of intelligence, spirit and spark of life. Today’s Day of the Dead Festival, celebrated across Latin America, has its origins in the ancient Meso-American culture.
